📚About the Author
For readers meeting you for the first time, who is Zina Becker?
Zina Becker is both a writer and a reader of psychological thrillers. She is also a dreamer, a wife and a mother.
What first sparked your interest in writing psychological fiction?
I have been a writer at heart for as long as I can remember. Human psychology has always fascinated me, and I have always loved thrillers. After reading so many stories, one day I said to myself, “I’m a writer. So why am I not writing the kind of stories I love?”
How would you describe your writing style in just a few words?
Emotional. At times, dramatic.
🌄About the Book — Mom Knows Best
What inspired the chilling premise behind Mom Knows Best?
I was inspired by a scene that kept playing in my head: the scene with the letter. I simply could not stop thinking about it. I was also thinking about how, sometimes, love convinces us that we are doing what is best for the people closest to us. We become certain we are right, even when our love and our desire to protect them are actually causing harm.
The book centers on a daughter who has never been allowed to leave the house. What drew you to explore this kind of confinement?
The idea of living in a gilded cage — safe and orderly, but isolated — made me want to explore how a person might genuinely react, and what the consequences might be for their life and mental wellbeing. I wanted to see just how far Alice, in particular, could go.
The description hints at control, silence, and a growing sense of danger. What emotional tone were you aiming to create?
Claustrophobia. Unbearable claustrophobia. That is also why I use repetition deliberately. I wanted readers to feel what Alice feels: hopelessness, suffocation, that crushing sense of being trapped.
Without spoilers, what do you think will shock readers the most?
That all the signs were right in front of them — and they fooled themselves.
How did you balance psychological tension with character development?
With difficulty! 🙂 It is hard to get the rhythm right between what is happening in the characters’ outer worlds and what is happening inside them. I hope I managed it well enough.
🌲Themes & Symbolism
The house itself feels like a character. What does it symbolize to you?
The house is a character in the novel. That is why I devoted so many words to describing it. To me, it symbolises hopelessness.
The idea of “good daughters don’t disobey” is powerful. What conversations were you hoping this theme would spark?
Does Mum really know best?
Silence plays a major role in the story. What does silence represent in this narrative?
It reminds me of a method some people use when trying to get a baby to fall asleep in its cot. The baby cries for so long, and nobody responds, that eventually it falls silent. Simply because it has learnt there is no point.
Control and protection blur together in the book. How do you explore that tension?
I explore it as a writer, through the different characters. And as a mother, every single day.
🧩Crafting Psychological Suspense
What techniques do you rely on to build psychological tension?
Above all, I rely on human psychology. On repetition, on tiny details that seem insignificant, and on the things characters leave unsaid. I like making readers feel certain they understand what is happening — and then showing them that the truth was in front of them all along, even if they could not see it.
Did any scenes push you emotionally while writing them?
Yes. It was difficult to describe the coldness and the lack of any response to the protagonist’s emotions. In the end, it was also difficult to finish the novel the way I did. But that is often how stories like this end in real life. Patterns repeat themselves. And I do not write fairy tales. I write about people.
How do you keep readers guessing without misleading them?
In all my books, the truth is right in front of the readers. I simply distract them.
👤Character Insights
Tell us about the protagonist—what makes her compelling to you?
The protagonist is exceptionally intelligent — a rare kind of intelligence. She also has an extraordinary ability to absorb things like a sponge. She becomes even more interesting through her encounters with the other characters.
What was the most challenging part of writing her emotional journey?
Deciding whether to save her. Whether to spare her.
Are any characters inspired by real people or real experiences?
The “Mum knows best” philosophy is a very common pattern. I know plenty of mothers like that. And I feel particularly close to one of the characters. Perhaps that is why she is my strongest character.
🔥Behind the Scenes
What part of the writing process for Mom Knows Best surprised you the most?
That I actually managed to write it! Despite its imperfections, I believe I achieved what I set out to do.
Did you learn anything about yourself while writing this story?
Yes. I learnt that this is exactly what I want to do, and that I will not stop writing. The story also convinced me that nobody is a monster in their own story.
What was the hardest scene to write—and why?
A flashback recounting violence against a child. As a woman and a mother, I find such things difficult to write. But sometimes they are necessary.
✍️Reader Experience
What do you hope readers feel while reading this book?
I hope they feel Alice’s claustrophobia. I also hope the book makes them question morality — and think twice before repeating this kind of behaviour.
If readers walk away with one message or emotion, what should it be?
We do everything out of love. Everything. And very little of it is actually the right thing to do.
🔮Looking Ahead
Are you working on any new projects you can tease?
Mom Knows Best has a sequel: Dad Knows Best, which is already available. I have published other books too — new stories for readers to lose themselves in.
Where can readers follow your work or learn more about Mom Knows Best?
My books are available on Amazon, and I am currently updating my website: www.zinabecker.com.
