❖ Introduction & Inspiration
What inspired you to write The Secret to Mama’s Joy, and when did you know this story needed to be shared with the world?
I wrote The Secret to Mama’s Joy because it was the book my own heart desperately needed, and I knew other mothers needed it too.
A few years ago, I found myself navigating a really heavy season wrapped in a lot of external stress. Like any mom, my absolute fiercest instinct was to protect my little boy. I tried so hard to put on a brave face and keep my struggles hidden.
I began to notice just how deeply attuned my son was to my emotions. He had this beautiful, remarkably sharp emotional intelligence. Even when I thought I was hiding my worry behind a smile, he could sense it, and I saw firsthand how much my feelings affected his little spirit.
That was the exact moment this book was born.
The book begins with a powerful moment—Mama crying on the couch. Why was it important for you to show this side of motherhood?
I wanted to create a gentle roadmap for the mom who is carrying the weight of the world, to remind her that she doesn’t have to be perfect. We live in a culture that pressures mothers to pretend they have it all together, which only isolates us when we are struggling. I wrote this book to smash that expectation. I wanted to create a gentle, reassuring roadmap for the mom who is secretly drowning in stress, to remind her that she doesn’t have to be perfect.
Your son inspired this book. How did your experiences as a mother shape the emotional heart of the story?
I started noticing that even when I said the right things, my son was absorbing my unspoken anxiety. He was deeply attuned to my heart, and I saw firsthand how my internal state directly affected his spirit and security.
That realization was a profound turning point for me. I learned that our children don’t need us to be flawless, emotionless superheroes; they just need us to be well.
As a high school teacher, how do your students and your work influence your writing or your understanding of family dynamics?
My students carry the energy, the love, the expectations, and sometimes the unspoken stresses of their homes. Teenagers are incredibly perceptive; they are at an age where they are acutely aware of what their parents are going through, even when those parents are trying desperately to hide it.
The story gently teaches children that they are not responsible for a parent’s happiness. What message did you hope parents would take away from this moment?
I want parents to know that it is completely okay to drop the mask of perfection. It is incredibly freeing to look at your child and gently say, ‘Mama is having a tough day, but it has nothing to do with you, and I am going to be okay.’ By doing that, we release them from the unfair weight of managing our happiness.
Many parents struggle with burnout, guilt, and the pressure to “do it all.” What parts of Mama’s journey reflect your own experiences?
I know what it feels like to sit in the quiet car or a dark room, feeling completely overwhelmed, yet feeling deeply guilty for not being happy when your child is your greatest blessing.
The family’s shift toward rest, balance, and slowing down is beautifully portrayed. What does self‑care look like for you personally?
Self-care means giving ourselves permission to pause, pray, and seek support. Sometimes it means talking to a best friend, having a slow cup of coffee, meditating, speaking to a therapist. and sometimes going out to get a manicure. We bring a much more peaceful, present version of ourselves back to our children when we take care of ourselves.
You live in Orange County, California. How does your environment—your community, culture, or daily life—influence your storytelling?
Living here, we are surrounded by such an abundance of natural beauty and wonderful resources, and I try never to take that for granted. When my mind feels cluttered or the external stresses of life start to feel too heavy, I can drive down to our amazing beaches. Just sitting by the ocean, watching the waves, and listening to the water provides a profound sense of peace and perspective that naturally flows directly into the heartbeat of my stories.
Our vibrant local culture influences my daily rhythm, too. I do a lot of my reflecting and writing tucked away in our beautiful local coffee shops, drawing inspiration from the energy of the people around me. More than anything, being in Orange County means being part of a community that deeply values wellness, family, and personal growth.
You mention enjoying trying new cuisine and visiting local coffee shops. Did any of these small joys make their way into the book’s themes?
I absolutely had to weave them into the fabric of the story. In fact, there is a specific moment in the book where a coffee shop plays a beautiful role in the plot. Throughout the story, there is also a deep embrace of cooking savoring different yummy treats. I included those elements because food, baking, and sharing a delicious treat are such universal ways families connect, laugh, and ground themselves. I wanted to show children and parents alike that finding joy doesn’t require a grand gesture.
🦋Writing the Book
What was the most challenging part of writing this book, and what was the most rewarding?
While it was born from my personal journey as a mom, I know that deep parental love, stress, and burnout aren’t exclusive to any one family structure. The hardest, yet most important task was intentionally crafting the story so it opened its arms to everyone. I wanted single moms, single dads, grandparents, and any primary caregiver doing the beautiful, exhausting work of raising a child to read these pages and feel perfectly seen.
Hearing feedback from a mother who used the story to share a tender, honest moment with their child, is a gift I can barely put into words. It is so deeply humbling to know that by sharing my own vulnerable pieces, I’ve helped create a safe little sanctuary where all caregivers can drop the heavy mask of perfection and just feel loved
If readers could walk away with one lasting message from The Secret to Mama’s Joy, what would you want it to be?
If readers could walk away with just one lasting truth from this book, it is simply this: you are not alone, and it is completely okay to show your emotions.
For a long time, I thought being a good primary caregiver meant wearing a mask of perfection and hiding my struggles from my child I hope this story gives single moms, single dads, grandparents, and every caregiver the gentle permission to drop that heavy mask.
How did your family react when they first read the story—especially your son, who inspired it?
It was such a genuine, touching moment for us. Seeing him recognize our bond in those pages, and seeing him feel proud of the journey we took together to find our balance, was the greatest validation I could ever ask for. It reminded me that children don’t look at our past struggles with judgment; they just see the love, the growth, and the beautiful, messy ways we show up for them every single day
